Brain Injury Awareness Month in October is a perfect time to put helmets on children in your community. TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads, a matching bicycle helmet giveaway program, is an easy and rewarding way to showcase physicians as heroes in their communities, demonstrating their concern for Texas children.

At the end of June, more than 4,500 Texas children had received new helmets in 40 giveaways that have spanned the state from Cleburne to Laredo to Athens to Lubbock.

By sponsoring an event, physicians can help improve child safety, prevent injury, and save lives. If you decide to participate, TMA will give you up to 50 helmets per event on a matching basis. That’s right. You can distribute 100 helmets for the price of 50 (about $250)!

You can make the event as simple or creative as you like and may want to consider partnering with another organization in your community. To assist you, TMA has prepared a manual that shares success stories from other campaigns and includes tips for working with the media. TMA also provides safety information and stickers for the helmets to distribute at your event. And program staff can help you along the way.

Hard Hats for Little Heads was created in 1994 by TMA to promote the use of helmets in wheeled sports, including in-line skating and when riding scooters. The program is funded by TMA Foundation through a grant from Prudential Financial and contributions from physicians and their families.
